A remarkable tale of bravery and survival unfolds in Western Australia, where a 13-year-old boy, Austin Appelbee, became a real-life superhero. In a heart-stopping adventure, Austin braved the perils of shark-infested waters to save his family from certain danger.
The Appelbee family, on a holiday near Dunsborough, ventured into Geographe Bay, unaware of the impending storm. As the calm waters turned rough, they found themselves in a life-threatening situation. With their kayak capsizing and paddles lost, Austin's mother, Joanne, made a difficult decision - to send her eldest son on a perilous swim to shore for help.
"It was one of the toughest calls I've ever had to make," Joanne shared with ABC. "I knew Austin was our best chance. He's strong, and I knew he could do it."
And do it he did! Austin embarked on a four-hour swim, covering an incredible 2.5 miles. He then ran another 1.2 miles to find assistance. Naturaliste Volunteer Marine Rescue commander Paul Bresland described Austin's efforts as nothing short of "superhuman."
But here's where it gets controversial... Austin's journey was not without its challenges. He had to abandon his inflatable kayak and swim without a lifejacket, battling rough seas and the constant fear of sharks.
"The waves were massive, and I had no lifejacket," Austin recalled. "I just kept telling myself, 'Keep swimming, keep going.'"
And this is the part most people miss: Austin's secret weapon was an unlikely source of inspiration - Thomas the Tank Engine! He focused on positive thoughts, imagining himself as a powerful locomotive, determined to reach the shore.
When he finally made it to land, Austin faced another obstacle. He had to run to the nearby town of Dunsborough to retrieve his mother's phone, as no one was on the beach to help him. It was a race against time, with the sun beginning to set and the family's chances of survival diminishing.
As the rescue operation kicked into gear, with water police, marine volunteers, and a helicopter joining the search, Joanne and her younger children clung to their paddleboards, singing and joking to keep their spirits up. But as the darkness fell, their hopes began to fade.
"I started to prepare myself for the worst," Joanne admitted. "I feared Austin might not have made it, and as the night deepened, I thought no one was coming."
However, fate had other plans. At 8.40 pm, a helicopter spotted the family, drifting about nine miles off the coast. The rescue team sprang into action, and as they approached, Joanne had a moment of panic when she couldn't hear her daughter, Grace. But then, a small voice called out, and they were all reunited.
"It was the best feeling in the world," Joanne said, tears of relief in her eyes. "We made it through as a family."
Austin, despite his sore legs and crutches, emerged as the hero of the day. His determination and courage saved the lives of his mother and siblings. Police Inspector James Bradley praised Austin's actions, saying they were nothing short of extraordinary.
