Uncover the Truth: A New App Reveals the Presence of Smart Glasses Around You
As smart glasses become increasingly common, such as Meta's Ray-Ban models, it's becoming harder to discern when someone might be secretly recording video in public. But there's an app that can help you stay informed and protect your privacy.
Meet Nearby Glasses, a smartphone app that scans Bluetooth signals and alerts users when they might be in the presence of smart glasses. These glasses can mimic ordinary frames but are packed with advanced technology, including speakers, microphones, AI features, and discreet cameras. Meta's Ray-Ban models, manufactured by EssilorLuxottica, have already sold over seven million units, and Snap's Spectacles-branded glasses are also available. Companies like Apple, Google, and Samsung are reportedly working on similar devices.
The potential for invasion of privacy is a growing concern. Meta is reportedly developing facial recognition technology called Name Tag, which would allow wearers to identify people and access information through their AI assistant. This raises questions about the ethical implications of such technology.
Yves Jeanrenaud, the app's developer, sees Nearby Glasses as a tool to combat surveillance tech. He and his team developed the app after reading reports of smart glasses owners using the technology to record people without consent, including disturbing incidents like men filming inside massage parlors and Customs and Border Protection agents wearing them during raids.
Nearby Glasses works by scanning for Bluetooth signals from devices using advertising frames. Jeanrenaud's team identified the signals used by Meta, Snap, and Luxottica Group, a subsidiary of EssilorLuxottica. However, he warns that the app can produce false positives, such as mistaking VR headsets for smart glasses.
The app is currently available for download on the Google Play Store and GitHub, with an iOS port in the works. Jeanrenaud emphasizes that while the app provides valuable information, it's not a perfect solution and should be used as a tool to raise awareness and promote responsible tech usage.
As smart glasses become more prevalent, staying informed about their presence can be crucial for privacy and security. Nearby Glasses offers a practical way to stay alert and take control of your digital environment.
