A disturbing incident has unfolded in North Wales, where a sacred cemetery, the final resting place of heroes, has been desecrated by illegal waste dumping. This act of selfishness has not gone unnoticed, and two individuals have been held accountable for their actions.
The Story Unveiled
Over the Christmas period, Cyngor Gwynedd received complaints about littering at Llanbeblig Cemetery, a vast site with a profound history. Among the graves lie 53 war casualties and 12 victims of the tragic 1952 "St Kevin" disaster, one of the worst commercial airliner crashes in Welsh history.
An investigation was promptly launched, and on January 6th, evidence of fly-tipping was uncovered. This led to the issuance of Fixed Penalty Notices to two individuals. One culprit was fined £180 for illegal waste disposal and unlicensed waste transportation, while the other received a £150 fine for breaching their duty of care, a common issue when householders hire unlicensed waste carriers.
Cllr June Jones, the cabinet member for street services, emphasized the council's zero-tolerance policy towards such acts, stating, "We will use our powers to prosecute those responsible."
The Impact and Consequences
Littering and illegal waste dumping have severe repercussions. Not only do they create an unsightly and unhealthy environment, but they also pose risks to public health, pollute the natural world, and harm wildlife.
"I urge people to take responsibility," Cllr Jones added. "Check the licenses of those who dispose of waste on your behalf. Most companies are responsible, but some are heedless, and their actions can have severe consequences for you."
Reporting and Prevention
Environmental crimes in Gwynedd can be reported through the Cyngor Gwynedd website or the apGwynedd app. The council has also provided guidance to ensure proper waste disposal:
- Regularly use the council's waste and recycling services to avoid waste buildup.
- For large clear-outs, take additional waste to your local recycling center after booking a slot and separating your waste.
- Arrange a bulky waste collection from the council for large items.
- When hiring a private/commercial house-clearing service, ensure they are registered and licensed. A list of registered waste transport companies is available on the Natural Resources Wales website.
