Lere Olayinka Claps Back: Why Kneeling for Wike is Not Sycophancy (2026)

The political arena is often a stage for dramatic displays, and recent events have ignited a fiery debate between Lere Olayinka and Reuben Abati. At the heart of this clash lies a question of loyalty, respect, and the boundaries of public service.

Lere Olayinka, the media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vehemently responded to comments made by Arise TV host Reuben Abati. Abati, during Tuesday's Morning Show, criticized Olayinka for what he perceived as excessive deference, specifically mentioning Olayinka kneeling down to serve Wike.

Abati drew parallels between Olayinka's actions and the alleged sycophancy he witnessed during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. He stated, "The high point of it was when our good friend, Lere Olayinka, knelt down trying to serve his master. What is all this?" He further elaborated on his experience, recalling instances of people crawling before President Jonathan, who, in contrast, would often urge them to stand. Abati suggested that Olayinka understands the 'game' better, hence the display of such gestures. "There is a time limit to all of this,” he added.

But here's where it gets controversial... Olayinka fired back on Facebook, arguing that Abati's lack of focus during his tenure as Media Adviser to President Jonathan contributed to the negative press the former president received. Olayinka challenged Abati to maintain this level of attention until January 2026.

He wrote, “But as I have maintained, if you had been this focused on your job as President Jonathan’s Media Adviser, the way you are fixated with anything Wike now, you wouldn’t have failed to adequately protect him (Jonathan) against the bad press he faced as President.”

And this is the part most people miss... Olayinka didn't stop there; he also brought up accusations of greed, referencing an incident where a woman allegedly fled with millions of naira intended for Abati's office.

This exchange raises several important questions. Is kneeling down a harmless display of respect, or does it cross the line into sycophancy? Does the media's focus on such displays detract from more critical issues? And how much does personal loyalty influence political dynamics? What are your thoughts? Do you believe Olayinka's actions were appropriate, or do you side with Abati's criticism? Share your opinions in the comments below!
