At the age of 45, Venus Williams has made headlines by setting a notable record at the Australian Open, though she met an early exit in the first round of the tournament.
In Melbourne, Australia, it took a remarkable span of 45 years for Williams to reach this milestone, and when it came time to fight for her place in the tournament, just a brief 14 and a half minutes felt like a blink of an eye as she served in a critical moment. Playing with a wild-card entry and ranked No. 576, the seven-time Grand Slam champion had a promising start, leading 4-0 in the third set against Olga Danilovic. Unfortunately, Danilovic mounted a strong comeback, clinching six straight games, including a pivotal break in a particularly long game, ultimately securing a win with scores of 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4.
Williams expressed her pride in her performance, stating, "It was an amazing journey on the court today," as she exited the stadium with a cheerful smile and a wave to the crowd. By simply participating in this first-round match, Williams made history as the oldest woman to participate in the singles main draw of the Australian Open, breaking the previous record held by Japan's Kimiko Date, who was 44 during her first-round loss in 2015.
Reflecting on her match, Williams shared, "I'm really proud of my effort today because I'm playing better with each match, getting to the places I want to get to. Right now, I just have to keep moving forward, improving myself, and managing my errors. These are aspects that come with playing more matches... it's kind of strange but incredibly exciting to have performed so well and come so close."
Having made her Australian Open debut back in 1998 at the tender age of 17, where she reached the quarterfinals, this marked her 22nd trip to Melbourne Park. Throughout her career, she has faced her sister, Serena Williams, in two finals here, in 2003 and again in 2017.
Recently married to Andrea Preti in December, the couple enjoyed their time together in Melbourne. Williams approached this tournament not only with the aim to surpass Date’s age record but also with aspirations of securing a victory that could set her up for another matchup against Coco Gauff.
After splitting the first two sets in her match, Williams showed flashes of her former greatness, dominating four games while conceding only five points. However, Danilovic, ranked No. 68, regained her composure and started applying pressure once more with her potent left-handed forehand returns.
Danilovic remarked, "I told myself before the match that playing against Venus Williams is a moment I can’t take for granted. At 4-0, I just focused on playing my game. It was such a pleasure to compete against such a legend."
In the deciding set, at a crucial moment of 4-4, Williams engaged in an intense service game that lasted 14 minutes and 28 seconds. During this stretch, she saved two break points and created game points for herself with powerful winners and clutch aces. Ultimately, however, she could not hold on, succumbing to Danilovic’s relentless play.
Reflecting on the thrilling match, Williams stated, "That was such a great game and an incredible moment. The crowd's energy was phenomenal and it really lifted me. She played a wonderful game too, and some luck was involved. That’s just how sports go sometimes, but it was an unforgettable experience."
Danilovic successfully served out the match, concluding it in 2 hours and 17 minutes, with a final point where a Williams forehand grazed the net and landed just wide of the line. Williams entered the Australian Open on a challenging note, having lost five consecutive matches following her single victory during her tour comeback in Washington last year. Her return at the U.S. Open also ended in the first round.
"Yeah, at 4-love, I felt good. It was the biggest lead I’ve experienced since coming back," Williams reflected. "In many ways, I'm relearning how to navigate my game again, if that makes sense."
Looking ahead, Williams plans to continue her journey by competing in doubles at Melbourne Park and will then consider her schedule for the remainder of 2026. "Right now, I'm fully focused on this tournament," she affirmed. "My next goal is the doubles, so that’s where my attention lies."
